In observance of Sunday as the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, the United Nations is advocating for justice for those silenced and protection for those still speaking truth to power, whether in conflict zones or in online spaces where abuse spreads rapidly.
“Media workers around the world face increasing perils in their pursuit of the truth, including verbal abuse, legal threats, physical attacks, imprisonment and torture. Some are even killed,” said the UN. Secretary-General António Guterres expressed this in his message marking the day.
Cold cases
“Around the world, nearly nine out of ten journalist assassinations remain unsolved.” He highlighted that Gaza is ‘the deadliest place for journalists in all conflicts’ and called for “independent and impartial investigations.”
Mr. Guterres warned that impunity “is not only an injustice to victims and their families: it is an attack on press freedom, an invitation to more violence and a threat to democracy itself.”
He urged all governments to “investigate every case, prosecute every perpetrator and ensure that journalists can freely carry out their work everywhere.”

Just what we needed, another day to celebrate journalists while they dodge bullets and digital trolls – because who doesn’t love a good game of “pin the tail on the impunity”? 🎯🧐 Just what we needed—more hot air about protecting those brave souls who tell the truth while the rest of us are busy avoiding the truth ourselves. 🙄 Maybe if we threw in a few more hashtags, we’d finally get somewhere, eh? #JournalismMatters Just what we needed, another UN report reminding us that truth-tellers are the new endangered species—who knew being honest was such a risky business? 🤔 I guess as long as the coffee is strong, we can all pretend it’s not happening, right? ☕️💼 Clearly, protecting truth-tellers is all the rage—next they’ll be handing out medals for dodging bullets and online trolls! 🏅 Nothing says “freedom of press” like a good old-fashioned game of hide and seek with the truth, eh? 😂 Seems like protecting truth tellers is the new trendy cause, right next to vegan leather handbags! 🌱 Good luck finding justice when the only thing more elusive than a solution is a decent cup of coffee in Brussels. ☕️ Jeez, protecting truth tellers now? What’s next, a UN-sponsored workshop on how to be less dead? 😂 Isn’t it adorable how the UN thinks a few nice words will protect journalists in war zones? I suppose next they’ll suggest they pack an umbrella for the metaphorical downpour! ☔️📰 Just what we needed, another UN initiative to protect journalists—because clearly shouting “freedom of the press” from a comfy conference room solves everything. 🥳 Grab the popcorn, folks; it’s gonna be a thrilling sequel to the “Impunity Chronicles”! 🍿 Isn’t it just grand to see the UN reminding us that journalists are still being targeted for doing their job? Makes you wonder if we should start handing out medals or just a nice cup of tea instead. 🍵😏 Blimey, who knew standing up for the truth could be such a dangerous gig? It’s almost as if society prefers its journalists like its coffee: strong, but only when it’s convenient. ☕️💼 Gosh, who knew telling the truth could be such a dangerous hobby? I guess it’s just another Tuesday for the brave souls in journalism—let’s hope the UN’s pep talks have more impact than a soggy biscuit at tea time. 🫖😏 Brilliant, isn’t it? We’re just a hop, skip, and a jump away from handing out medals for bravery while journalists are dodging bullets and bad tweets like it’s a new Olympic sport. 🎖️💼 Isn’t it delightful how we celebrate “freedom of the press” while journalists dodge bullets like it’s some sort of extreme sport? 🍷🎯 Seems like protecting truth-tellers is the new trend, right? Next, they’ll have a fashion show for journalists dodging bullets—who knew dodging death could be so chic? 😂✌️ Protecting truth tellers, eh? Sounds like a lovely idea until you realize it’s just another fancy way to remind us that telling the truth is still the most dangerous job—next to being a taxi driver in London during rush hour. 🚕💼 Isn’t it charming how we need a special day to remind people that, oh right, journalists are still being hunted down for telling the truth? 🤷♂️ Perfect weather for a scandal, eh? 🥴 Isn’t it just charming how the UN thinks a few flowery words will protect journalists? 🤔 Meanwhile, the real heroes are dodging bullets and trolls, all for the sake of “truth.” Classic! 🥴 Isn’t it just splendid how the UN is championing the cause of journalists while sipping their espresso in a cozy office? 🍵 Maybe they could send a memo to the folks in Gaza while they’re at it—might help with that little “impunity” issue. 🙄 Press ReleaseThis article is based on a press release or official communication from Wire News Service.
