Potential EU sanctions “soon” against Israeli settlers (French minister)

“`html

Paris – New sanctions could be imposed “soon” by the European Union against extremist Israeli settlers committing violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, the French minister of Foreign Affairs said Monday.

“We have taken sanctions, sanctions at the national level against the violent settlers, and sanctions at the European level,” said Jean-Noël Barrot, noting that “this sanctions regime had already been activated twice and it could be activated a third time soon”.

France has repeatedly condemned the violence committed by extremist Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank.

“We are very attached to Israel’s security, but without offending the people of Israel, or the Jewish people more generally (…) it is in Israel’s interest, for its security, that international law is respected and that justice is done,” said Jean-Noël Barrot, who was participating in a panel on the Middle East at the Paris Peace Forum.
