The industry giant has relentlessly opposed French officials regarding the measures. According to its own internal 2024 statistics, Pornhub’s French audience ranks as the second-largest globally after the United States, ahead of the Philippines, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.
Solomon Friedman, a partner at Ethical Capital Partners, which owns Aylo, said in a Tuesday briefing that the French law was “dangerous,” “potentially privacy infringing,” and “ineffective.”
“It’s about prioritizing our values, and that involves directly communicating with the French people about what their government fails to disclose,” Friedman stated.
The European Commission is also developing another age verification solution and has accused Aylo platforms of violating its Digital Services Act concerning minor protection.
Aylo, like social media platform Meta, is advocating for device-level age verification. “We are willing to collaborate with operating system manufacturers, app stores, and other tech partners to ensure that only adults access the platform. It’s not about evading responsibility. It’s about blocking access at the source,” Friedman explained.
France’s Digital Minister Clara Chappaz accused Aylo of misinformation regarding the French measures, which she claimed were privacy-preserving, in a Tuesday post on X. “Deception when refusing to comply with the law and holding others hostage is unacceptable. Adults are free to consume pornography, but not at the cost of child protection,” she asserted.
Aylo did not reveal the duration of the suspension and expressed their hope to find a solution to restore access to its adult content in France soon.
