Pope Urges Investigation into Possible Genocide in Gaza

Pope Francis has called for an investigation into whether Israel’s strikes on Gaza constitute genocide, according to excerpts from an upcoming book.

Israel’s attacks, which have resulted in more than 40,000 deaths, are widely viewed as retaliation for the October 7, 2023 assault by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on Israel.

In the book, the pope states, “According to some experts, what is happening in Gaza has the characteristics of a genocide.” He emphasizes the need for this to be carefully investigated to determine if it meets the formal definition as determined by legal experts and international bodies. These comments were first reported by the Italian daily La Stampa on Sunday.

This marks the first time Pope Francis has used the term genocide concerning the ongoing conflict in Gaza, according to a report by the Associated Press. Previously, in September, he had suggested that Israel’s military actions in both Gaza and Lebanon were immoral and disproportionate.

The comments are part of a forthcoming book, “Hope Never Disappoints. Pilgrims Towards a Better World”, scheduled for release ahead of the 2025 Jubilee. The book, authored by Hernán Reyes Alcaide, is based on interviews with the pope.

  1. Ah, because nothing says “let’s tackle global crises” quite like a papal nudge, eh? One almost expects the Vatican to roll out a “Pope’s Guide to Human Rights”—maybe with a side of holy water for good measure. But hey, at least the Holy See is keeping itself busy while the rest of us are just trying to figure out how to get our pints in peace!

  2. Ah, what a delightful turn of events! Just when we thought the Vatican was all about holy water and peace treaties, the Pope has decided to dip his toes into international politics with a call for an investigation into possible genocide in Gaza. It’s almost as if he’s trying to make a splash in the pool of global conscience—how very avant-garde of him! One can only hope this newfound zeal for justice doesn’t interfere with his busy schedule of blessing football matches and discussing the finer points of espresso brewing.

  3. Ah, nothing says “let’s resolve global conflicts” quite like a papal inquiry into a genocide. I suppose the Vatican is now accepting applications for detectives, right after the next round of espresso. I can’t wait for the follow-up: “Pope’s Book of Unsolved Mysteries.”

Ah, the Pope calling for an investigation into a possible genocide in Gaza—what a refreshing take from the Vatican! It’s almost as if he believes that the world might actually care about accountability rather than just trading barbs at the next EU summit. I suppose when it comes to moral leadership, better late than never, eh?

Ah, the Pope, ever the busy bee, now wants to investigate possible genocide in Gaza—because, you know, a little divine intervention is just what we need amidst all this human chaos. It’s like asking a fish to fly just because it’s swimming in troubled waters; maybe he should stick to turning water into wine instead of trying to transform geopolitics into a happy ending. As they say in Europe, it’s all just another day in the circus—pass the popcorn!

The Importance of EU Institutional Accountability

The Importance of EU Institutional Accountability

When the European Commission withholds documents, when the Council negotiates behind closed doors, or when an EU agency exercises power with limited public scrutiny, EU institutional accountability becomes a practical question about who can challenge decisions, who sees the evidence, and who pays the price when oversight is weak.
For those who follow Brussels closely, this is not a niche procedur
