Zeebrugge (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Belgian police boarded Greenpeace’s ship Witness in Zeebrugge after about 50 activists blocked the Fluxys LNG terminal using boats and a pontoon with Putin and Trump inflatables. Some arrests reported.
As VRT News reported, Belgian police boarded the Greenpeace ship Witness in the port of Zeebrugge, near Bruges, on Thursday evening, Oct 2, 2025. The incident followed a protest that started earlier last week.
About 50 activists from Greenpeace spent the night on the water near the Fluxys terminal from Tuesday night (September 30, 2025) to Wednesday morning (October 1, 2025). The terminal is accepting scheduled deliveries of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Greenpeace commented that the protest focuses on Europe’s gas dependence on Russia and the US. The organisation cautioned that energy dependence is a security risk and contributes to the climate crisis.
Why did police intervene in Greenpeace’s Zeebrugge LNG blockade?
Greenpeace has discussed the protest as part of a larger effort to force Europe to promote renewable energy and limit the use of fossil fuels. Authorities took swift action to ensure port activity resumed safely. The police boarded the vessel and managed the protest effectively without any incidents.
Police initially monitored the blockade and allowed it to continue without interference. Greenpeace reported that some activists were arrested during the operation. It is not yet clear whether the blockade has ended completely.
On October 1, 2025, over 70 Greenpeace activists from 17 countries launched a blockade at the Fluxys LNG terminal in Zeebrugge, Belgium. They used kayaks, rubber boats, a larger ship, and a pontoon displaying inflatable faces of Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump to occupy the terminal’s nearly 400-meter-long entrance.
