Petra De Sutter Elected as New UGent Rector, Defeating Van de Walle

Ghent (Eurotoday) – Petra De Sutter has been elected as the new rector of Ghent University, winning broad support across the academic community and replacing Paul Van de Walle. She pledges to bring accountability, safety, and reform after recent controversies at the university.

Petra De Sutter secured victory in the Ghent University rector elections, gaining the highest number of votes from professors, students, and both academic and administrative staff. Her win comes in the wake of multiple scandals that have tarnished the university’s reputation in recent years.

Outgoing rector Paul Van de Walle had sought re-election, but De Sutter’s promises of reform and a fresh approach won over the university community. She emphasized zero tolerance for misconduct, particularly among students, during her campaign.

Who is Petra De Sutter, UGent’s New Leader for Change?

De Sutter ran a campaign focused on transparency and creating a safe, responsible environment at Ghent University. With nearly 53,000 eligible voters, predicting the outcome was difficult, but De Sutter garnered strong backing across all groups.

A prominent member of the Groen party, De Sutter served as Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and had been considered for party leadership. However, she chose instead to step away from national politics to focus on leadership in academia. While she is stepping down from federal politics, she intends to remain active in her hometown of Horebeke, pending university approval due to the rector role’s full-time demands and typically apolitical nature.

De Sutter is no stranger to Ghent University, having previously worked as a professor and researcher there. Her deep understanding of the institution could help her tackle its most pressing challenges.

Joining her in this leadership role is Herwig Reynaert, who brings expertise in university governance and will serve alongside De Sutter for the next four years. Together, they aim to maintain the academic excellence of Ghent University while navigating a landscape shaped by increasing student activism, international political tensions, and heightened public oversight.

  1. Well, looks like Ghent University has traded in a Van de Walle for a De Sutter—talk about an upgrade! 😏 Let’s hope her promises of “accountability” don’t end up being as effective as a chocolate teapot! 🍫☕

So, we’ve traded a van for a De Sutter, eh? As long as she keeps the scandals at bay, I suppose we can all pretend this is an upgrade! 😏🎓

So, Petra De Sutter has decided to swap the political circus for a university stage, eh? Nothing screams “reform” like a former Deputy Prime Minister claiming she’ll fix the academic mess – I can already hear the students sharpening their protest signs! 😂📚

So, after all that drama, we’ve got a new head honcho at UGent. I suppose if you’re looking for accountability, best to start fresh—maybe even sweep the scandals under the rug with a nice new broom? 🧹😏
