The Coordination Committee of the Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council issued a statement condemning actions by Ministers from certain states for using fabricated facts and criticizing Ms. Albanese for comments she never made.
In her speech, Albanese mentioned, “We as a humanity have a common enemy.” She clarified during her remarks and afterward that she was referring to a “system”—including media and Western governments—that supports Israel while it commits a “genocide” in Gaza.
Critics accused Albanese of making an antisemitic remark against Israel. A shortened video, shared by the UN Watch advocacy group’s executive director, depicted Albanese as calling Israel humanity’s common enemy, gaining over a million views on X.
Calls for Albanese’s resignation emerged, led by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, with backing from Germany, Italy, Austria, and the Czech Republic.
U.S. Ambassador to France Charles Kushner supported Barrot’s demand. Albanese was sanctioned by the U.S. last year, with the State Department criticizing her for “unabashed antisemitism, expressed support for terrorism, and open contempt for the United States, Israel, and the West.”
Albanese has denied the antisemitism accusations incited by the video.
