Nuuk Mayor Criticizes Comedian for Attempting to Raise US Flag in Greenland

Greenland authorities fined Schafroth for a stunt in which he reportedly posed as a U.S. official, as reported by German news outlet t-online citing the show’s production company. Witnesses said he attempted to raise a U.S. flag, leading to locals confronting him in a video on social media, where one person told him what he was doing was illegal. Schafroth responded, acknowledging the wrongdoing and expressing regret for the failed attempt at making a deal.

Residents were displeased, and one was heard calling Schafroth “a rude comedian.” POLITICO reached out to Schafroth but received no response by publication time.

Local leader Olsen criticized the act, stating that raising the flag of a military superpower suggesting force against Greenland was inappropriate and harmful. She insisted that humor differences do not justify actions that cause fear or threaten safety.

NDR, the network associated with the stunt, expressed regret through German media, clarifying that Greenlanders weren’t the intended target of the satire. POLITICO also sought a comment from NDR but did not immediately receive a response.

Looks like Schafroth thought he could play with flags like a kid in a candy store—too bad he didn’t check if he had the right currency for that sort of international humor. 🍭🇩🇰
