North Macedonia Joins SEPA: Streamlined and Expedited Euro Payments

Skopje – The Ministry of European Affairs has expressed its enthusiasm over the European Payments Council’s (EPC) recent decision to include North Macedonia in the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), effective as of yesterday.

Being a part of SEPA will facilitate quicker, easier, and more cost-effective transactions for both individuals and businesses. This integration means that remittances from the EU will be processed more swiftly and at reduced costs, while enterprises will enjoy streamlined payment operations across Europe. Furthermore, this membership is expected to bolster international confidence in North Macedonia’s financial systems and enhance trade relations with the European Economic Area.

– As per the EPC schedule, North Macedonia’s financial institutions are set to start joining SEPA in April 2025, with payment service providers expected to be operationally ready by October 5, 2025. This milestone marks North Macedonia’s entry into the unified European payment market, representing a significant move by the Government towards fostering European economic integration and enhancing financial services for its citizens and businesses. Joining SEPA is a clear advantage stemming from the Western Balkans Growth Plan, aimed at expediting integration, as stated by the Ministry of European Affairs. (March 7)

Oh, fantastic! North Macedonia’s joining SEPA – nothing says “we’re serious about finance” like finally getting around to using a payment system that most of Europe adopted before the last millennium. 🧐 But hey, better late than never, right? Cheers to streamlined payments that come just in time for our next fiscal crisis! 🍻
