SOFIA – The “Europe” motorway, linking Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, to the Serbian border, is now operational. This 63 km route is part of the main trans-European transport network, connecting the “Kalotina” border crossing and the “Orient/East Mediterranean” corridor. It facilitates the route from London to Kolkata through Budapest, Belgrade, Niš, Sofia, and Plovdiv, serving as the shortest link between Western Europe and the Near and Middle East, according to the Bulgarian Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works.
Minister Ivan Ivanov highlighted that the connection between the Orient and Western Europe is now established. He noted that infrastructure projects anticipated by Bulgarian citizens are progressing and expected to be completed on schedule. Ivanov emphasized the importance of executing priority connectivity projects with the north and south, which is a key commitment of the government and an expectation from European partners.
During the inauguration, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov mentioned that the construction of remaining road infrastructure projects in the country is actively ongoing.
The first segment of the motorway, stretching from the “Kalotina” border crossing to Dragoman, officially began construction in May 2019.
Funding for the motorway construction comes from the national budget as well as the European Union. (14.09.2025)
