New Environment Commissioner: Desertification and Flooding Pose Challenges for the EU

Brussels – In her first significant report as EU Environment Commissioner, Jessika Roswall reveals that only 40 percent of surface water in the European Union is deemed to be in good condition.

“Our water resources are polluted, our supply is at risk, and we are not adequately addressing flood prevention,” warns Roswall, the former EU Minister from Sweden, as she discusses the water status across the 27 EU member states.

“We have long treated water as if it were an endless resource, and this mindset must change,” she emphasizes, highlighting that 74 percent of Spain is vulnerable to desertification.

The report aims to lay the groundwork for a water resilience strategy for the EU, which Roswall plans to unveil later this year.

Oh brilliant, just what we needed—another report to tell us that our water’s more polluted than a fish market on a hot day! 🌊💦 At this rate, we’ll be pricing bottled tap water like fine wine! 🍷😅
