WARSAW (ANP) – According to Brekelmans, Ukraine is currently lacking a critical component for its defense. “They are very pleased about this,” the minister noted, emphasizing that it will enable Ukraine to reorganize its defense capabilities and enhance its overall air defense.
While the Netherlands is unable to deliver a complete air defense system, it has previously supplied Ukraine with other vital components, including a launch device, Brekelmans stated.
On Thursday, the Netherlands did not announce any additional commitments, such as involvement in the proposed reassurance force in Ukraine during a ceasefire. Brekelmans indicated that other member states have also refrained from making such commitments, partly due to differing opinions on the matter. “Some advocate for a deterrent force, others for an assurance force, and some for a training force,” he explained.
Brekelmans believes that member states must first reach a consensus on the objectives of a potential mission, its mandate, and how to react in the event of escalation. Military planners need to determine what resources are necessary based on these discussions. “Ultimately, a political decision on whether to participate will follow,” he added.
The Netherlands prefers not to establish a permanent brigade in Lithuania, as Germany is currently doing. “For now, we will continue with rotations,” Brekelmans confirmed.
