The conflict in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. In response, Israel began a large-scale military offensive. Since then, more than 50,000 people in Gaza have been killed, and over 90 percent of the population has been forced to flee their homes.
A tenuous ceasefire between Israel and Hamas collapsed on March 18 when Israeli forces resumed aerial and ground operations. Diplomatic efforts led by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States are ongoing in an attempt to broker a new agreement and secure the release of Israeli hostages still held in Gaza.
On Saturday, Hamas announced that it had accepted a new ceasefire proposal presented by the mediators. However, Israel responded with a counter-offer, and negotiations continue.
Meanwhile, on Sunday—coinciding with the beginning of Eid al-Fitr, the holiday marking the end of Ramadan—an Israeli airstrike reportedly killed eight people, including five children.
