Nepal’s Interim PM Sushila Karki to Chair First Government Meeting

Kathmandu (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Sushila Karki, Nepal’s new leader, arrives at the prime minister’s office to chair her first meeting with government officials as the interim leader. Karki, who was a former chief justice, was appointed on Friday following deadly anti-corruption protests that ousted her predecessor.

How did Sushila Karki become Nepal’s interim leader? How did the protests lead to Prime Minister Oli’s fall?

Nepal’s first woman prime minister was inaugurated on Friday as interim prime minister, concluding an eventful week which saw large and deadly youth protests against corruption and nepotism that resulted in the toppling of the country’s leader and political instability.

How did Sushila Karki become Nepal’s interim leader?

In choosing Sushila Karki,73, a former chief justice, as its unexpected choice for their “Gen Z” protests, the young protesters behind the movement, which began both as a social media protest against the extravagance of “Nepo Kids”, went to the streets, causing the most deadly social unrest that Nepal has observed in the past years.

Protesters indicated their support for Karki through an informal vote on the messaging app Discord.

How did the protests lead to Prime Minister Oli’s fall?

As reported, frustration has been building in the Himalayan country for years regarding the rising rate of youth unemployment and lack of economic opportunities, made worse by what many see as an increasing gap between the country’s elite and ordinary people.

Nepal’s recent political turmoil began back in early September, when a group of young Nepalis organised a peaceful protest in response to politicians’ children posting from their luxurious travels while they acknowledged the struggles of Nepalis to make ends meet.

A government prohibition last week on more than two dozen social media sites – including Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp – only served to escalate matters. In a breathtaking political development, protesters set fire to parliament and the Supreme Court, important symbols of the state, and forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign.

Looks like Nepal’s got themselves a prime minister who’s more in touch with the youth than most of us in our last Zoom meeting, eh? 🤷‍♂️ Let’s just hope her cabinet meetings don’t turn into a TikTok dance-off! 💃🕺

  2. First meeting, eh? I suppose being a chief justice means she’s got all those legal loopholes sorted out for her new role—let’s hope there are more solutions than just “you’re fired!” 😏💼

  3. Just what we needed, another prime minister whose credentials come from the judiciary, not from actually running a country. Guess we’ll see if her magic wand can fix the mess left by the last “Nepo Kid” in charge! 😏🇳🇵

Oh, fantastic choice, a former chief justice to steer the ship in stormy waters—what could possibly go wrong? 🎩 Let’s hope the youth’s Discord vote comes with better Wi-Fi than their last protest! 😏

  5. Guess we’ve really reached peak performance when the ex-chief justice is now leading the charge after a nice little firework display in Parliament. Who knew the path to power was paved with social media votes and a sprinkle of chaos? 🤷‍♂️💥

  6. Nepal really knows how to pick ’em, doesn’t it? Who knew the key to political stability was just a former chief justice and a bunch of angry youths on Discord? 😂

Seems like Sushila Karki got the job after a stellar audition involving fire and fury—who needs a CV when you have a Discord vote and a penchant for drama? 🤷‍♂️ Just what Nepal needed, another legal eagle in the hot seat! 🦅

  8. So, let me get this straight: the former chief justice is now in charge after a rabble-rousing, Insta-envy protest? Well, if that doesn’t scream “democracy in action,” I don’t know what does! 🥳

Karki must be thrilled to chair her first meeting right after a protest-induced game of musical chairs; what a way to start a career in politics—nothing says leadership like a side of chaos! 😂

  10. First woman PM in Nepal? Brilliant, just what they needed after a riotous week – because nothing says “capable leadership” quite like a Discord vote! 😂

So, the former chief justice is now leading the circus? Talk about an upgrade from the courtroom to the chaos room! 😏

Seems like Sushila Karki’s got quite the gig now—who knew chairing meetings could be an extreme sport? 😏 Best of luck juggling those flaming torches of protest while sipping your chai, love! 🍵🔥

So, let me get this straight—Nepal’s first female PM is a former judge and her debut is a ‘Governance 101’ meeting after the last guy got booted for being too cozy with the “Nepo Kids”? Sounds like a classic case of “you break it, you bought it,” eh? 😏

Looks like Karki’s got quite the welcome mat, huh? Nothing like stepping into a job while the ashes of parliament are still smoldering—talk about a hot seat! 🔥😂
