Amid growing concerns across Europe about Donald Trump’s potential impact on NATO, given his past remarks questioning the alliance’s value and threats not to defend members failing to meet financial contributions, former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte is stepping into the spotlight.
Rutte, now formally serving as NATO’s secretary-general since October, recently held discussions with U.S. Congressman Mike Waltz, Trump’s pick for national security adviser. In a post on platform X, Waltz emphasized, “A strong NATO that restores deterrence and peace requires all member nations to do their part commensurate with their economic strength!”
Having served as Dutch prime minister for nearly 14 years, Rutte was considered to have nurtured a more favorable relationship with Trump compared to many other European leaders during Trump’s previous term.
