Three left-wing Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) from Finland, Spain, and Portugal claimed they were on an “observation mission” to assess compliance with a recent EU court ruling concerning trade agreements between the EU and Morocco.
The MEPs—Finland’s Jussi Saramo, Spain’s Isabel Serra, and Portugal’s Catarina Martins—traveled in a personal capacity, as their visit was not an official mission organized by The Left group or the European Parliament, two officials told POLITICO.
In October 2024, the EU’s Court of Justice ruled in favor of the Polisario Front, a movement advocating for Western Sahara’s independence. The court’s decision annulled trade deals that had enabled Morocco to export fish and agricultural products from Western Sahara to the EU.
Morocco claims sovereignty over Western Sahara, a disputed coastal region in North Africa that was formerly under Spanish control. However, Algeria supports the Polisario Front, which has been campaigning for the territory’s self-determination for decades.
“We have a good connection with the Polisario as well as other NGOs we were trying to meet,” Saramo stated.
“Morocco does not want us to witness the human rights violations they are committing in illegally occupied Western Sahara,” he added in a post on Instagram.
