Montenegro’s Political Leadership Attends the Vienna New Year’s Concert

Vienna (APA) – This year’s New Year’s Concert by the Vienna Philharmonic will attract several distinguished guests from Montenegro. Austria’s Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen will host the president of the EU accession candidate, Jakov Milatović, alongside his wife Milena Milatović at the Musikverein. This was confirmed by the Presidential Chancellery in response to an APA inquiry. Meanwhile, Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP) has invited his Montenegrin counterpart Milojko Spajić.

For decades, Austria has been a staunch advocate for EU enlargement to encompass the Western Balkan states, as stated by the Federal Chancellery on Sunday in a response to APA, reaffirming the commitment of Montenegro’s leadership.

Montenegro aims to finalize accession negotiations by 2026

“The security and stability of Europe begins in our immediate vicinity, particularly within the Western Balkans. Montenegro has demonstrated, more than any other candidate, an ambitious and successful path towards EU accession in recent years,” the statement emphasized. “These bold reforms must finally be recognized by the European Union.” Montenegro is aiming to complete its EU accession negotiations next year.

Austria’s Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) will hold an informal working meeting in Vienna on January 1 with Cypriot Migration Minister Nicholas Ioannides and Finnish Interior Minister Mari Rantanen ahead of the New Year’s Concert, focusing on asylum issues. Cyprus will assume the EU Council Presidency from Denmark for six months at the start of the year. (30.12.2025)

Oh great, nothing screams “business as usual” like a fancy concert in Vienna to celebrate Montenegro’s slow dance towards EU membership. 🎻💼 Meanwhile, I’m just here wondering if the music’s loud enough to drown out the sound of all those ambitious promises. 🍾
