The Commission has proposed a multiannual budget of 300 billion for income support, which represents 80 percent of the current funding for the common agricultural policy. Member states have the option to inject additional resources into agriculture via their “national and regional partnership plans,” aiming for a combined budget of 865 billion euros.
Member of Parliament Anne Pirson (Les Engagés) expresses concern that the proposal may favor industrial agriculture over family farming.
Minister Clarinval shares this worry, criticizing the reduction in funding and the merging of the agricultural budget with other European resources, as well as the potential for reallocating funds and the establishment of climate objectives without adequate consultation.
“I will communicate this concern to my colleagues in Finance and Budget,” who represent Belgium in the negotiations set to conclude in 2027. “Immediate action is essential,” stated Clarinval.
