European Parliament President Roberta Metsola stated on Saturday that she will not leave her duties in Brussels to lead Malta’s Nationalist Party or pursue the prime ministerial role in her home country.
“In politics, achieving the position of prime minister by leading your party to victory in elections is the highest personal ambition. However, this is not about my personal goals, but about what responsibility means in politics,” Metsola posted on Facebook on Saturday.
After the sudden resignation of party leader Bernard Grech on Tuesday, there was speculation in Malta regarding whether Metsola would move from Brussels to Valletta. Metsola is one of her party’s most popular figures and is viewed as a unifying candidate who could secure a Nationalist victory in the next general elections, scheduled by March 2027.
However, on Wednesday, Metsola indicated in remarks to POLITICO that she intends to remain in Brussels to fulfill her responsibilities. Her Saturday post confirmed that she will not return to domestic politics, dispelling rumors that she might assume the party leader role while serving as European Parliament president.
“My commitment and focus cannot be divided,” Metsola stated.
