The member states activated the temporary protection directive shortly after Russia’s 2022 invasion, allowing Ukrainian refugees to bypass traditional asylum processes. This provided them with immediate residency rights and access to housing, social assistance, healthcare, the labor market, and education. Currently, around 4.3 million Ukrainians are under temporary protection in the EU, with over 93,000 in Belgium.
This regime, which has been extended multiple times, is set to last until March 4, 2026. The European Commission has proposed extending it by another year, until March 4, 2027. On Friday in Luxembourg, the Interior Affairs and Migration ministers unanimously approved this extension.
Belgian Minister of Asylum and Migration Anneleen Van Bossuyt (N-VA) expressed support for the extension, stating, “This provides stability for the Ukrainian displaced persons and for the countries that host them. We want to discuss the future with Ukraine and other member states. When it becomes safe, we must aim for a return focused on hope and reconstruction.”
