Riyadh (Eurotoday) – Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of State, has arrived in Saudi Arabia for anticipated talks with Russian officials aimed at ending the three-year war in Ukraine.
These discussions follow a phone call between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which Trump urged top officials to commence negotiations. Trump has repeatedly pledged to bring the conflict to an end during his presidential campaign.
Saudi Arabia, which is also engaged in negotiations with the US concerning the future of the Gaza Strip, has played a pivotal role in early talks with the Trump administration.
How does Marco Rubio intend to conclude the war?
Rubio, who has spoken by phone with his Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, will be meeting Russian officials in Saudi Arabia alongside Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, and White House Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff.
He emphasized that the coming days and weeks will determine whether Putin is sincere about seeking peace.
“One phone call does not make peace,”
Rubio stated on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday.
“One phone call does not solve a war as complex as this one, but I can tell you that Donald Trump is the only leader in the world that could potentially begin that process.”
He also remarked:
“I said yesterday that ‘peace’ is not a noun, it’s a verb. It’s an action. You have to take concrete steps toward it.”
Why is Zelenskyy shocked by the planned Saudi meeting?
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed surprise over the planned talks in Saudi Arabia, despite earlier assurances from the US that Ukraine was invited.
“I saw that someone said there would be a meeting in Saudi Arabia. I do not know what it is,”
Zelenskyy stated on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.
Zelenskyy is currently in the UAE for a previously scheduled visit. He noted that he also plans to visit Turkey and Saudi Arabia but does not intend to engage with U.S. or Russian officials.

Oh, brilliant! A little chat in the desert with the Russians to sort out a three-year war—what could possibly go wrong? 😂 It’s like trying to fix your broken down Lada with a cup of tea and a biscuit!

Oh, look at that! Marco Rubio, the globetrotting peacemaker, has traded in his suit for a keffiyeh in Saudi Arabia—because obviously, nothing screams “let’s end a war” like a cocktail of diplomats and oil barons. 🤷♂️💼 Just what the world needed—a few more phone calls to sort out a three-year mess!

Oh, brilliant! Just what we need—Rubio, a man of peace, in a country renowned for its warm hospitality to dissenters. I guess if anyone can sort out a three-year war over a cup of Riyadh coffee, it’s definitely a politician with a penchant for phone calls. 😂
