“I observe a U.S. president who is proactive, desires peace, and aims for the Nobel Peace Prize. But achieving the Nobel Peace Prize is contingent upon ending this war,” Macron stated on Tuesday.
“We must exert pressure on the Israeli government to halt this war and secure the release of the 48 hostages,” he added. “It’s feasible, nothing is predetermined.”
Earlier on Tuesday, during his address to the U.N. gathering, Trump reiterated his assertion that he had “ended seven un-endable wars” and claimed that people believed he “should receive the Nobel Peace Prize.”
Macron’s statements came as European leaders increasingly express frustration over Trump’s apparent hesitation to impose sanctions on Russia due to its ongoing invasion of Ukraine or pressuring Israel to cease military operations in the Gaza Strip.
Macron, in turn, has provoked the U.S. and Israel by advocating for Western nations to recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations annual assembly this week. On Monday, Macron himself recognized the Palestinian state, a move previously mirrored by the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada.
Trump criticized this trend towards recognition as “a reward for these horrible atrocities, including Oct. 7.”
Trump also mentioned he was “actively involved” in pursuing a ceasefire in Gaza, but that Hamas had “repeatedly rejected reasonable peace proposals.”
In an interview following Trump’s speech, Macron argued that recognizing a Palestinian state serves to “isolate” Hamas by strengthening the Palestinian Authority and encouraging it to implement reforms.
