Brussels – Czech Foreign Minister Petr Macinka emphasized today that there is no justification for easing sanctions on Russia while the war persists and attacks on Ukraine continue. His remarks came ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, where the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine will be a central focus. The EU is set to unveil its twentieth sanctions package against Moscow by the end of February, marking four years since the conflict began.
“In my view, as long as the war remains and Russia continues its assaults on Ukraine, there is little reason to relax the sanctions,” Macinka stated regarding the proposed restrictions. He noted that these measures are crucial for exerting pressure on Russia and demonstrating Europe’s stance.
Earlier in January, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloniová advocated for Europe to initiate negotiations with Russia regarding the Ukraine war. She proposed establishing a European special envoy role to unify Europe’s voice. Macinka echoed this sentiment, suggesting, “If we do not take such steps, we risk being sidelined. Therefore, having a representative for peace negotiations could be beneficial.” He concluded, “It is better to engage than to remain absent.” (29 January)
