Lier (Eurotoday) – In the city of Lier, officials have temporarily halted the issuance of cycling fines on Lierse Vesten due to signage that does not comply with legal standards. Alderman Andries emphasized that the goal remains public safety, while a 2023 court case brought to light the necessity for properly installed and legally sound signage.
As a result of this decision, cyclists are currently allowed on Lierse Vesten on Sundays without the risk of being fined. The suspension stems from the discovery that the previous signs prohibiting cycling were not legally enforceable. Therefore, any fines previously issued under those signs lacked legal backing.
Although fines are on hold, the police will maintain a presence in the area. Authorities clarified that officers can still intervene if they observe cyclists engaging in hazardous behavior—especially if it puts pedestrians, including families with young children, at risk. The city is determined to ensure Lierse Vesten remains a safe and accessible area for all users, and monitoring will continue during this interim period.
Will new signage resolve the cycling concerns on Lierse Vesten?
The city of Lier has announced plans to install new, legally compliant signage as soon as possible to reinforce the cycling ban on the Vesten. However, no exact timeline has been given, as the city must contract a specialized company to carry out the work.
Once the updated signs are in place, city officials hope to restore the Vesten as a safe walking area, free from bike traffic. Alderman Andries reiterated the risks posed by cyclists to pedestrians, particularly younger children, and affirmed the city’s ongoing commitment to managing bike traffic in a way that prioritizes public safety.
This move follows a significant legal ruling in 2023 when a cyclist contested a fine received for riding on a pedestrian path in Lier. The court found in favor of the cyclist, concluding that the cycling ban could not be enforced due to the signage failing to meet required legal standards. The case underscored the importance of proper signage in upholding regulations and paved the way for the city’s current approach.
