Eddy De Smedt from the VSOA union reported a disturbing incident involving a colleague who was woken up at night by neighbors who saw his blank” rel=”noopener”>car on fire. Upon investigation, it was found that the car’s windows had been smashed and a firebomb was used to start the fire. The colleague received a threatening letter warning him that the attackers would return if he continued his job at the prison. This alarming combination of arson and threats has raised serious concerns about the safety of prison staff.
What measures are being taken to protect Leuven-Central prison guards after arson and threats?
The prison guard from Heers, who works at Leuven-Central prison, has been verbally threatened multiple times, according to De Smedt. He noted that aggression in prisons is increasing, partly due to overcrowding, and threats are now affecting the guard’s personal life. The guard, who wishes to remain anonymous, and his family are deeply impacted by these events, as are his colleagues. He is known for being friendly, dedicated, and punctual in his work.
The Prison Service has confirmed that a car fire was an act of arson. The police and public prosecutor are investigating whether it is linked to the guard’s job. They are taking the situation seriously and are focused on supporting the affected guard and all staff members. The public prosecutor described the incident as very serious and is asking anyone who saw anything suspicious recently to report it to the police at 0800-30300.

What a delightful way to show appreciation for the prison guard’s dedication—nothing says “thank you” quite like a firebomb. Honestly, at this rate, we should just hand out marshmallows and call it a barbecue! 🔥🍢
