Leuven (Eurotoday) – Leuven’s Car-Free Sunday is moving from its usual late August slot to 21 September this year, bringing the event in line with the rest of Flanders. The day will feature a range of activities such as King of the Ring, the Short Chain Market, Bike Plaza, Maakleerfest, and a flea market hosted at Vismarkt.
As reported by VRT News, the city of Leuven decided to change the event’s date following concerns that it clashed with the busy period when students arrive for the new academic year, which begins around 21 September. Previously, holding the event at the end of August was meant to avoid interfering with that influx.
However, after conducting a survey, city officials found that students are now moving in more gradually over the month rather than all at once. With this more flexible student arrival trend, Leuven has opted to synchronize its Car-Free Sunday with the broader Flanders region. This change not only supports easier planning and coordination but also reduces potential disruption for students.
What’s new for Leuven’s Car-Free Sunday on 21 September?
This year’s Car-Free Sunday in Leuven will include both familiar events and new additions. The much-loved “King of the Ring,” where participants cycle or walk around the ring road, remains a staple. However, the popular flea market will shift from the ring road to the Vismarkt square.
With the flea market moving locations, Bondgenotenlaan—where it was previously held—will now be open for sports activities, making room for more active participation throughout the city. Organizers say these changes aim to make the day more enjoyable and accessible for all residents and visitors.
A new feature this year is the introduction of the “Short Chain Market,” where local producers and small businesses can sell their goods directly to consumers. The initiative supports regional farmers and makers, while also promoting environmentally friendly shopping by cutting down transport distances.
Martelarenplein will transform into a “Bike Plaza,” offering everything bike-related—from repair stations and workshops to cycling demonstrations. The city emphasizes that this is part of its broader effort to promote sustainable transport and reduce car dependency.
In addition, the “maakleerfest” by Maakleerplek will return, offering a mix of workshops, exhibitions, and interactive experiences focused on sustainability and circular usage. Meanwhile, the Olevodroom on Brusselsestraat will host various dance performances and entertainment.
Residents are also encouraged to set up outdoor seating with tables and chairs in front of their homes to enjoy the community atmosphere. City officials will release more detailed information on traffic plans and event programming in the coming weeks.

Oh, fantastic! Nothing says “let’s celebrate the environment” quite like a rescheduled Car-Free Sunday that perfectly aligns with the student chaos – because who wouldn’t want to bike through a throng of freshers on their first day? 🚴♂️🍻

Oh great, another day of pretending we love biking while dodging students and their IKEA boxes! 🚴♂️ At least the flea market’s got a new spot—perfect for those who need a fresh excuse not to go to the gym. 😏

Oh, fantastic, a Car-Free Sunday in September—just what we needed to spice up the students’ chaotic move-in week! 🎉 Nothing like a little pedal-powered pandemonium to really kick off the academic year, right? 🚴♂️💨

Oh great, a Car-Free Sunday just in time for the students to create their own traffic chaos! 🎉 Nothing says ‘sustainability’ quite like a flea market on the Vismarkt while I dodge cyclists like a taxi driver in Paris. 😂

Changing Leuven’s Car-Free Sunday to September 21? Brilliant! Nothing says “let’s celebrate the environment” like throwing a bike parade in the middle of student chaos—good luck finding a parking spot for your two-wheeler! 🚴♂️💨

Oh, brilliant! Because nothing screams “sustainable living” like cycling in circles while dodging freshly moved students and their Ikea furniture. 🚲💨 Can’t wait to see how many bicycles end up at the new “Bike Plaza” instead of actual bikes at home! 😅

Changing the date of Leuven’s Car-Free Sunday to accommodate those pesky students? Brilliant move! Nothing says “we care” like moving a car-free event to make room for the next generation of procrastinators. 🚴♂️💨

Oh joy, another Car-Free Sunday in Leuven—just what we all needed to celebrate the grand arrival of students with more cycling than a Tour de France! 🚴♂️ Can’t wait for the “Short Chain Market”—because nothing says eco-conscious like dragging your local farmer out of bed for a chat, right? 😂
