Reform Diverted
Before the election, polls indicated Craig had a strong lead. Reform UK’s challenge weakened as resources were redirected due to Nigel Farage initiating a separate by-election in Clacton to avoid financial scrutiny.
The Greens targeted supportive areas. In Longsight, within the Gorton and Denton constituency, candidate Geraldine Coggins mentioned aiming for a “hat-trick,” after recent wins with a councilor and an MP. Led by Zack Polanski, the party invested in an air campaign, promoting Instagram videos featuring leader Hannah Spencer and Coggins.
In Greater Manchester, with an electorate of 2.1 million and just 5 weeks to campaign, Coggins explained, “You can’t hit all those doors.”
Coggins’ Instagram achieved 4.6 million views in 30 days, with campaign ads displayed 50.7 million times, her team noted.
Conversely, Craig invested £53,000 in digital ads on Meta and Google, stating to POLITICO: “People have been stopping me in the street. I’ve been highly visible even amid party attacks.” A yellow Labour bus roamed as voters hit the polls on Thursday, with campaigners promoting “Vote Bev today” via microphone, supported by cheering activists waving posters.
Reform seemed to diminish their efforts. A Bolton local mentioned not receiving any Reform campaign leaflets, which typically rely on social media and mail rather than door-knocking, despite increased activity in May’s local elections, especially in the northern city region.
Reform’s candidate Sian Astley faced criticism for skipping hustings hosted by Manchester Mill, spending just £14,000 on digital ads.
