The nation is experiencing an internet blackout, hindering the flow of information from Iran concerning the suppression of widespread protests. The U.S.-based Iranian Human Rights Activists News Agency estimates that 3,308 people have died and has confirmed 24,000 arrests.
“The Iranian nation must break the back of the seditionists just as it broke the back of the sedition,” Khamenei stated in a televised address on Saturday. “We do not intend to lead the country to war, but we will not spare domestic criminals,” he added.
The protests began due to economic issues in late December and have intensified, with many demonstrators now demanding Khamenei’s resignation.
In a conversation with POLITICO on Saturday, Trump remarked, “It’s time to look for new leadership in Iran.”
