Kapetanović: Regional Collaboration in the Western Balkans Can Transform Significant Startup Potential into Tangible Growth

Sarajevo/Podgorica, (Fena) – The Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) collaborated with the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) and the European Enterprise Network (EEN) to unveil a joint study titled “The Startup Ecosystem of the Western Balkans at a Crossroads” during the ministerial meeting of the Western Balkans Platform for Research and Innovation Management.

This meeting was organized by the European Commission, with Poland presiding over the Council of the European Union, alongside the Government of Montenegro.

The study, marking the first extensive regional examination of the startup ecosystem in the Western Balkans, was introduced by RCC Secretary General Amer Kapetanović and Signe Ratso, Deputy Director General of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation.

The findings indicate that approximately 150,000 individuals are employed in the region’s information and communication technology sector, contributing 2 percent to the GDP. However, startups secured only 29.5 million euros in funding last year, considerably lower than their counterparts in neighboring EU countries. The main obstacles remain limited private investment, inconsistent regulations, and brain drain.

Kapetanović noted the region’s entrepreneurial potential, emphasizing the need for structured support to foster sustainable growth.

– Therefore, we have developed the “Regional Innovations for Startup Excellence” (RISE) program aimed at connecting innovative entrepreneurs with seasoned mentors, offering targeted training to bridge the skills gap, and providing modest financial resources to aid teams in navigating the crucial early stages of development – he stated.

He highlighted that the RISE Program is designed to support inexperienced innovative teams and promising startups in evolving from concept to market-ready products.

Signe Ratso pointed out that the report leverages EIT’s expertise in innovation and entrepreneurship, the RCC’s role in enhancing regional integration, and EEN’s extensive support framework for small and medium-sized enterprises in the area.

– Our collective efforts are focused on strengthening the innovation ecosystem, minimizing disparities, and ensuring local innovators can fully benefit from the European single market for innovation – she added. (24.10.)

Right, so we’re just a few seminars away from turning that 29.5 million into a billion, aren’t we? Can’t wait for the next round of “brain drain bingo” as we connect the dots between innovative ideas and the nearest exit! 😂

Seems like the Western Balkans got their hands on a shiny new manual for startups—because, you know, the last 29.5 million euros just wasn’t enough to spark any actual innovation! 😂 If only ideas were as abundant as the regulations holding them back! 🥴

Looks like the Western Balkans are on the brink of a startup revolution… or a lovely game of ‘let’s pretend we have it all figured out’ 🤔. I mean, who needs private investment when you’ve got a shiny new program to bridge that skills gap, right? 😂

Oh, brilliant! Because when you think of transforming startup potential, the first thing that comes to mind is a meeting in a region known for its “inconsistent regulations” and “limited private investment.” Can’t wait to see those €29.5 million turning into a Balkan Silicon Valley! 🙄💸

A fantastic initiative, really! Because who wouldn’t want to chat about innovation while sipping espresso and watching startups trip over their shoelaces for a few million euros? 🇲🇦💸

  6. Must be nice to have 150,000 techie jobs while startups scrape together pocket change; sounds like a real “RISE” to the occasion, innit? 🤔💸

So, let me get this straight: we’re counting on a bunch of bureaucrats to turn dreams into euros while sipping espresso in a committee room? Sounds like the perfect recipe for a startup success story, doesn’t it? ☕️💸

Now there’s a groundbreaking initiative if I’ve ever seen one! RISE – because who wouldn’t want their startup dreams to come with a side of bureaucratic enthusiasm and a sprinkle of funding fairy dust? 😏💸

So, we’re really banking on a “RISE” program to lift the region from the startup stone age to the land of milk and honey, eh? Guess we’ll just have to hope those “modest financial resources” aren’t the equivalent of pocket change. 😏💸

  10. Oh sure, because throwing a fancy program at startups in the Balkans is definitely going to solve the brain drain and funding issues overnight. Can’t wait for the “RISE” program to turn into a spectacularly slow-motion train wreck! 😏🚂

Blimey, sounds like a right hoot – 150,000 folks in IT and only a measly €29.5 million for startups? Must be a special talent to turn potential into… well, not much at all! 🤷‍♂️💸

Seems like the Balkans are finally joining the startup party, but with a guest list shorter than a pub closing time! 🍻 Who knew 29.5 million euros could be the new “big” in a region that’s been holding its breath for innovation?

Funny how they finally realized that startups in the Balkans might need a *tiny* bit of help. Next, they’ll be suggesting that water is wet! 😂💼

Oh, fantastic! A “RISE” program for startups in a region where even the coffee shop owners can’t get a loan—what a stroke of genius! ☕💸

Right, because all it takes to turn the Western Balkans into a startup utopia is a fancy program and some PowerPoint slides. Next stop, Silicon Valley… or maybe just the nearest café for a coffee break. ☕😏

  16. Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed—another study to remind us that with 29.5 million euros, we can almost afford a decent espresso in the EU. RISE sounds lovely, but let’s hope it doesn’t rise to the occasion like last year’s soufflé! ☕️💸

So, we’ve got a fancy study and a shiny new program to help startups in the Balkans, eh? Can’t wait to see how “RISE” turns into “FLY” with all that red tape and “limited private investment” – but hey, at least they’re dreaming! 😏💸

Looks like the Balkans are on the brink of a startup revolution—if only they could find a way to keep their best minds from booking one-way tickets to Berlin! 🤷‍♂️💼

So, let me get this straight: a fancy meeting, a shiny report, and a program called RISE, and we’re still stuck in the same startup traffic jam? Classic Balkan charm at its finest! 😂

Oh, brilliant! Just what the Balkans need—another program to tell startups how to succeed while they’re busy trying to find funding and not get their brains drained! 😏✨
