Bratislava – The European Union’s support for renewable energy sources (RES) lacks long-term economic viability. The REPowerEU initiative, designed to decrease reliance on Russian energy and expedite the transition to renewables, is viewed as an illogical endeavor that jeopardizes the energy security of EU member states, according to the Regulatory Office for Network Industries (ÚRSO) on Friday, TASR reports.
“Energy sector decisions need to be rational and technically viable rather than politically driven. The inclusion of Russian nuclear fuel under RePowerEU could endanger the energy security of the entire European Union,” stated ÚRSO Chairman Jozef Holjenčík.
The EU has greatly impacted the energy landscape in favor of renewable energy sources
The office highlighted that the EU’s Green Deal agenda has already significantly altered the energy mix toward RES, resulting in an increase in hours with negative electricity prices. In 2024, ÚRSO documented 288 trading periods with negative pricing, rising to 293 by the end of September 2025.
“Negative prices stem from the surplus energy generated by RES, which necessitates active balancing within the system. In response, we have shortened the trading interval to 15 minutes and adjusted the charges for deviations,” Holjenčík clarified.
ÚRSO has consistently advocated for local production of RES to minimize inefficient transmission and maintain stability. The regulator also views nuclear energy as the most cost-effective, ecological, and reliable option for ensuring energy stability in Slovakia and the broader region. (October 10)
