Italy has been struggling with its persistent issue of femicide—the killing of women—following the high-profile murder of 22-year-old university student Giulia Cecchettin.
Cecchettin was killed in November 2023 by her ex-boyfriend, Filippo Turetta, sparking nationwide protests demanding action against gender-based violence. Her funeral was attended by more than 8,000 people, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Turetta was sentenced to life in prison the following month.
According to Italy’s interior ministry, 117 femicides were recorded in 2023.
In the 2024 Gender Equality Index for the EU, Italy ranked 14th, falling behind the overall EU average. Other member states have made greater strides in addressing gender inequality, pushing Italy further down in the rankings.
Although Italian women have achieved more representation in leadership positions, their workforce participation remains the lowest among EU member states, according to the index’s findings.
