Jerusalem (Eurotoday) – Local health authorities reported on Saturday that Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 146 Palestinians in fresh attacks on Gaza over the past 24 hours, wounding hundreds more, as the country appears set to continue its expanded ground offensive, Reuters reports.
On May 5, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Israel was preparing for a more aggressive military operation against Hamas. His security cabinet has approved plans that could include establishing full control over the Gaza Strip and overseeing aid distribution efforts.
What does Israel’s expanded campaign in Gaza involve?
Since Thursday, Israeli air raids have led to one of the deadliest periods since the March breakdown of a temporary ceasefire. These latest attacks took place as U.S. President Donald Trump concluded his Middle East tour on Friday, which yielded no visible progress toward renewing negotiations for a truce.
“Since midnight, we have received 58 martyrs, while a large number of victims remain under the rubble. The situation inside the hospital is catastrophic,” said Marwan Al-Sultan, the director of the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza. Local authorities reported 459 injuries as a result of the bombings within a single day.
How is Gaza’s health system near total collapse?
Gaza’s already fragile health infrastructure is nearing collapse. Hospitals have been repeatedly targeted throughout the 19-month-long conflict, and the supply of medical resources continues to run dangerously low due to Israel’s tightened blockade implemented in March.
What is Operation Gideon’s Wagons aiming to achieve?
The escalation of troop deployments — including increased armored vehicle presence near the border — comes as part of ‘Operation Gideon’s Wagons.’ The mission, according to Israeli officials, aims to dismantle Hamas and rescue hostages held in the Gaza Strip.
On Saturday, Israel’s military confirmed it was conducting widespread airstrikes and readying troops to broaden operations across the Gaza Strip, with the goal of establishing “operational control” in several areas. “We are gradually increasing forces; Hamas remains defiant,” a military spokesperson stated.
How has Trump responded to the Gaza crisis?
On Friday, Donald Trump acknowledged the worsening hunger crisis in Gaza and emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian deliveries, as international pressure on Israel mounts to resume ceasefire talks and lift its blockade.
A U.S.-backed foundation has announced plans to begin aid distribution in Gaza by the end of May, employing private American security and logistics firms. Nevertheless, the United Nations has declared it will not partner with the foundation, citing concerns over impartiality, neutrality, and independence.

Nothing quite says “peace negotiations” like a few airstrikes and a body count, eh? Sounds like a real masterclass in diplomacy—I’m sure the awards will be rolling in soon. 😏💼

Brilliant tactics, really—just when you think the bar couldn’t get lower, they manage to dig a trench for it! 🤦♂️ Guess it’s all about maximizing “collateral damage” these days; who needs peace when you have such impressive stats? 💔💥

Oh, splendid! Just when we thought the Middle East was running out of ways to get more complicated, here comes another round of aerial fireworks. Must be a new marketing strategy for “Operation Gideon’s Wagons”—more bombshells, less humanitarian aid! 🎉💥

Just another day in the Middle East, eh? It’s like they’re handing out airstrikes like free baguettes at a French bakery! 🥖💥
