Jerusalem (Eurotoday) – Local health authorities have reported that Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip killed at least 100 Palestinians overnight on Sunday, coinciding with newly launched ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas mediated by international actors.
The Israeli military has ramped up its aerial assaults on the enclave, claiming hundreds of lives since Thursday, as it prepares for a fresh ground offensive aimed at securing “operational control” over areas of Gaza.
What impact have the strikes had on Gaza civilians?
“We have at least 100 martyrs since overnight. Complete families were wiped off the civil registration record by Israeli bombardment,” stated Khalil Al-Deqran, spokesperson for Gaza’s Health Ministry, according to Reuters.
Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure is struggling to function under continued Israeli attacks and damage to hospital facilities. A blockade on vital aid — including food, fuel, and medicine — has worsened conditions, with Israel holding Hamas accountable. Hospitals remain overwhelmed, with a growing influx of injured patients, many of whom are children.
In a bid to pressure Hamas into releasing Israeli hostages, Israel has blocked all humanitarian supplies from entering Gaza since March. An Israeli plan to take full control of the Gaza Strip and further restrict aid deliveries has also been approved. Hamas maintains that no hostages will be freed without an Israeli ceasefire in return.
Backed by the United States, mediators from Qatar and Egypt began a new round of indirect ceasefire discussions on Saturday. However, sources familiar with the negotiations told Reuters that little progress had been made so far.
Is Hamas ready to trade hostages for a ceasefire?
According to BBC and Sky News Arabia, Hamas is proposing a two-month ceasefire in exchange for the release of approximately half of the Israeli hostages in return for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
A Hamas official told Reuters:
“Israel’s stance remains the same; they desire the release of their prisoners without any promise to conclude the conflict.”
Meanwhile, media reports suggest that the possible death of Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar may further challenge the progress of ceasefire discussions.
How has Israeli shelling affected Gaza’s medical facilities?
The Indonesian Hospital — one of northern Gaza’s largest remaining hospitals — halted its operations on Sunday following heavy Israeli bombardments in the vicinity, as reported by Gaza’s Health Ministry.
At Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s largest medical facility, staff are urgently requesting blood donations due to the high number of wounded. Hospital authorities reported receiving 40 bodies and numerous casualties overnight following continued Israeli airstrikes.

Oh brilliant, nothing says “let’s negotiate” quite like a little bit of aerial persuasion. It’s like trying to have a tea party while the kettle’s boiling over—cheers to diplomacy! 🍵💥

Seems like peace talks have taken a rather explosive turn—who knew negotiations could come with such a bang? 🎇 Maybe next time they should try a less “hands-on” approach to get the ball rolling. 🤷♂️

Well, it seems the ceasefire talks are going swimmingly—who knew airstrikes and negotiations could go hand in hand like a fine Bordeaux and a stinky Camembert? 🍷✈️ Looks like progress is as likely as a sunny day in London!

You know, nothing says “let’s negotiate peace” quite like a round of airstrikes; it’s like inviting someone over for tea and then throwing their biscuits out the window. 🍵✈️ Talk about mixed signals, eh?

Just when you thought ceasefire talks were a great excuse for a leisurely tea break, along comes a reminder that nothing says “peace negotiations” quite like a hundred unexpected departures from Gaza. Classic diplomatic timing, isn’t it? 😂

Isn’t it just delightful how the art of negotiation in the Middle East includes a side of airstrikes? 🎉 Who knew diplomacy could be so… explosive?
