Negotiations are ongoing for a ceasefire and hostage exchange deal to end the conflict between Hamas and Israel, which began after Hamas launched a cross-border attack in October 2023. The assault resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and led to Israel’s invasion of Gaza. Reports indicate that more than 60,000 Palestinians have been killed, and the enclave has been left devastated.
Just before U.S. President Donald Trump’s inauguration, both parties agreed to an initial six-week ceasefire. However, while Hamas seeks to proceed to the second phase of the agreement, Israel prefers to extend the first phase to continue the hostage exchange without committing to a permanent end to the war.
Last week, a spokesperson for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Israel might escalate pressure on Hamas, including the possibility of cutting off all electricity to Gaza, if its demands in the hostage negotiations were not met.
This development comes after both sides signaled on Saturday that they were gearing up for the next round of ceasefire discussions. While Hamas described “positive indicators” for moving forward, it provided no further details.
Israel has confirmed that negotiations will resume in Qatar on Monday. Netanyahu’s office announced that Israel had accepted the mediators’ invitation, backed by the U.S., and would send a delegation to Doha to push the talks forward.
