Cecilia Sala, an Italian journalist, was detained by Iranian authorities in December under accusations of “violating the law of the Islamic Republic” during a reporting trip to Tehran.
Her detention occurred just days after Italy arrested Mohammad Abedini, an Iranian national accused of providing drone components to Iran. However, Iranian officials have denied any connection between the two events. “These two matters are entirely unrelated,” stated Esmail Baghaei, a spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry, during a press briefing on Monday.
Sala’s release marks a significant political achievement for Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who recently met with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Among other topics, the two leaders discussed Sala’s case during their meeting.
The news of Sala’s release was met with immediate celebration by members of Italy’s right-wing government, who praised Meloni for her leadership and determination throughout the process.
“Cecilia Sala is coming back. Immense work by Giorgia Meloni first and foremost, and by the entire Italian team: Tajani, Mantovano, Palazzo Chigi, the Farnesina, our security services, and anyone who could be of help. Welcome home,” said Defense Minister Guido Crosetto in a statement shared on social media.
