Brussels – A conflict has arisen between Hungary and Sweden. On Monday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán made the inaccurate assertion that “284 underage girls have been arrested for as many murders” in Sweden.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson labeled the claims as “outrageous lies.” However, ahead of the EU ministerial meeting on Tuesday in Brussels, the Hungarian government returned the accusation.
“The Swedish Prime Minister stated that we imprison opposition members in Hungary. I can assure you that this is a lie,” remarked Hungary’s EU Minister János Bóka as he arrived at the meeting.
No peace talks between Sweden and Hungary are anticipated.
“I will not provide Viktor Orbán and his lies with more attention by discussing it at today’s ministerial meeting,” stated Swedish EU Minister Jessica Rosencrantz shortly after Bóka’s arrival.
“However, I must emphasize that it is indeed a lie and a blatant attempt to distract from Hungary’s serious issues regarding the rule of law and the oppression of civil society,” Rosencrantz added.
On Monday, the Swedish Prime Minister addressed Orbán’s comments:
“We are not unfamiliar with hearing absurdities from Hungary. Honestly, what Hungary is doing to Ukraine is far more serious than Orbán spreading falsehoods about Sweden,” said Ulf Kristersson.
