Imprisoned Journalists Awarded This Year’s Sakharov Prize

Strasbourg – The EU’s highest human rights accolade has been awarded by the European Parliament to imprisoned journalists from Belarus and Georgia.

Polish-Belarusian Andrzej Poczobut and Georgian journalist Mzia Amaglobeli were recognized by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola.

Metsola declared in the Strasbourg chamber, “Their bravery has made them symbols of the struggle for freedom and democracy,” while announcing this year’s recipients of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.

Poczobut was detained in Belarus in 2021 and was sentenced to eight years in prison two years later. Amaglobeli was arrested in Georgia in January and has received a two-year prison sentence.

The Sakharov Prize, named after Soviet nuclear physicist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Andrei Sakharov, has been presented since 1988. Last year, it was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who also received the Nobel Peace Prize this year.

Isn’t it charming how the EU throws a fancy award at journalists locked up for speaking their minds? 🎩 I suppose being a symbol of freedom from a cozy Strasbourg seat is the new “business as usual” in European politics! 😂

Looks like the EU’s idea of a ‘get well soon’ card for brave journalists is a shiny prize while they sit behind bars—how thoughtful! 🙄👐 Just what they need to feel better, right?

Guess it’s a lovely day when the EU throws a party for journalists behind bars—nothing like a little recognition to brighten a cell, eh? 🎉🗞️

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “freedom of thought” quite like giving awards to folks who can’t even think freely behind bars. 🏅🥴

Isn’t it just delightful how the EU honors imprisoned journalists with a fancy prize while sipping espresso in Strasbourg? Bravo, lads, your “symbolic” gestures are as comforting as a wet sock! 😂

Would you look at that, giving awards to journalists stuck in the slammer – must be a new trend in freedom fighting! 🎖️ Maybe next year they’ll get a holiday in the Bahamas as a bonus? 😂

Oh, what a surprise! Another round of applause for journalists in jail—guess freedom has become the new luxury item, eh? 🥂 Who needs vacations when you can rack up awards from behind bars?

Seems like the EU’s got a knack for handing out shiny awards to those behind bars—real innovative approach to human rights. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe next year they’ll give a prize to the prison guards for “Best Supporting Role” in this tragicomedy! 🎭

Oh, look, another shiny award for those poor souls in prison—because nothing says “we care” quite like a trophy from the EU, right? 😂 Can’t wait for the next winner: “Most Courageous Behind Bars.”
