Hunger Lines in Gaza: ‘Food Is Not Enough’

The struggle to earn a living is relentless, with countless individuals, including men, women, and children, lining up under the harsh sun at the few community kitchens that offer only lentil soup.

A community kitchen in western Gaza paints a picture of distress among displaced individuals, echoing their cries for assistance and their desperate pleas to the world to end their suffering.

Kitchen staff are busy preparing lentil soup while plastic bowls and empty plates accumulate behind an iron barrier, waiting for a small serving that many might not even get to taste.

After a difficult battle, Ziad Al-Ghariz, an elderly displaced Gazan, secured a cup of lentil soup. Seated on the ground, he slowly sipped it. He shared with UN News that bread has been absent from his diet for ten consecutive days.

The scene is dire, with cries of “We are dying of hunger here.” Ziad expressed his reliance on the lentil soup distributed by the community kitchen, as he cannot afford flour or other basics. “Gaza’s people are hungry,” he lamented.

Young Mohammed Nayfeh recounted spending four hours waiting for a meal for his family, only to face disappointment amidst the crowds and heat. “We’re dying,” he cried out. “We need food and drink. Where is the world?”

Displaced Palestinians gather in front of a local community kitchen in western Gaza City, revealing scenes where individuals must choose between enduring the sun or risking being trampled in the crowd. Umm Muhammad, a displaced person from Shujaiya, described the grim reality surrounding her, where the lack of essentials forces her to return empty-handed despite the struggle.

Hussam al-Qamari, also displaced from Shujaiya, declared the situation untenable, emphasizing the urgency of aid for starving children. “Our children are starving to death,” she stated, highlighting the unacceptable suffering in Gaza.

The plight of Gaza’s children is severe; many suffer from malnutrition, with visible increases daily. The haunting image of a little girl clutching her empty bowl behind an iron fence, waiting for lentil soup, encapsulates the tragedy. Bassam Abu Odeh implored the global community for help, emphasizing that the current aid is insufficient.

Umm Rami from Zeitoun neighborhood highlighted the severe lack of basic necessities in Gaza, urging the world to view the situation with compassion. She stressed that food alone is not enough, as the lives of children now revolve around queuing for basic sustenance.

Gaza faces an undeniable famine risk, with food consumption and nutrition indicators at their worst due to the ongoing conflict. The IPC warns that Gaza is nearing famine, urging a comprehensive humanitarian response. The UN Secretary-General stressed the need for significant aid, calling for immediate action to avert catastrophe.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports ongoing casualties and deaths from hunger and malnutrition, even as temporary tactical pauses are declared. Conditions for delivering aid remain inadequate, highlighting the urgent need for effective humanitarian support.
