Sint-Niklaas (Eurotoday) – The brand-new ‘Hopmarkt’ beer festival made its debut on the Sint-Nicolaasplein in Sint-Niklaas, inviting locals and visitors alike to enjoy a weekend of beer tasting accompanied by live music under sunny spring skies.
The first edition of Hopmarkt drew large crowds to the central square of Sint-Niklaas. Organised by a coalition of 15 local hospitality businesses, the event offered 60 beers to sample. The lively atmosphere was enhanced by music performances and a big-screen showing of the Tour of Flanders cycling race on Sunday, creating a festive, community-centric ambiance.
Adding to the unique experience, organisers introduced a no-deposit policy for the small tasting glasses, making it easier for attendees to sample a variety of beers at just 2.5 euros per glass.
“Sint-Niklaas really needed such an event, and you can tell that right away from the great turnout,”
remarked Kurt, a local resident.
“This square was on its last legs, but if everyone works together like today, a lot is possible.”
“That way, you only pay 2.5 euros per beer at every stall.”
“The concept with the tasting glasses works perfectly,”
said Kurt.
“This way, you can enjoy different beers without ending up completely under the table. Our discovery today? We really liked the Cuvée de Briqville from the Van Goethem brewery in Steendorp.”
“We also want to organise Hopmarkt again next year during the weekend of Flanders’ Finest, and since the start will be in Antwerp, the riders will also pass us by,”
said Steve Vonck, co-organiser and owner of café ‘t Hemelrijk.
The decision to skip the traditional deposit system for tasting glasses was based on encouraging festivalgoers to sample more freely without added expense.
Live music performances added vibrancy to the festival, though they briefly caused tension with a religious service at the nearby St. Nicholas Church.
“The pastor came to ask if we could turn off the music, but since our audience was slightly larger, we decided not to do that,”
explained Steve Vonck.
Background Behind Sint-Niklaas’s New Hopmarkt Beer Festival
Located in Belgium’s East Flanders region, Sint-Niklaas is steeped in the country’s beer heritage. Belgium is renowned for its brewing tradition, with over 1,500 unique beer varieties produced by more than 400 breweries nationwide. Prior to Hopmarkt, the city had not hosted a significant beer-focused public festival. The event was initiated by a group of 15 local caterers determined to revive the Sint-Nicolaasplein area, which had seen reduced foot traffic in recent years.

Isn’t it charming how Sint-Niklaas found a way to liven up a square that was practically begging for a pint? 🍻 Who knew that a bit of live music and 60 different beers could work miracles—maybe next year they’ll throw in some free confetti for good measure! 🎉 Oh, splendid! A beer festival in Sint-Niklaas where you can sample sixty brews for just 2.5 euros, because who needs a night out in Brussels when you can sip and sway under the watchful eye of a slightly disgruntled pastor? 🍻 Just what the town needed—a cure for boredom and a chance to “revive” the local square, or as we say, “make it less of a ghost town!” 😂 Oh, because nothing says community spirit quite like a clash between holy hymns and happy hour! 🍺😂 Who knew 60 beers could resurrect a square faster than a miracle?
