Halle (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A mobile catering trailer at Stationsplein, Halle, allows job seekers to try hospitality work. VDAB Flemish Brabant and Valerie Detobel provide training and support to fill staff shortages in the sector.
As VRT News reported, a catering trailer has been placed at Stationsplein in Halle. The mobile kitchen allows job seekers to experience work in the hospitality industry. They mentioned that visitors can try cooking, serving customers, and handling kitchen tasks.
“We want to tackle the search for hospitality workers locally, so we’re bringing our mobile kitchen to people,”
says Valerie Detobel, of Social Economy and Employment Halle.
“Today, you can learn how to chop vegetables, serve snacks, make mocktails, and much more. There’s a lot of interest in these workshops.”
What can Halle’s mobile kitchen do to tackle hospitality staff shortages?
According to experts, finding staff for hospitality is not easy. Detobel explains that the job requires passion and commitment, not just technical skills.
“Weekend and evening shifts also make it harder to attract workers,”
he said.
Officials mentioned that many people are not sure if a job in the hospitality industry is right for them. VDAB Flemish Brabant set up a mobile kitchen to help them find out.
“Our mobile kitchen allows people to see if they are a good fit for the sector,”
says Jo Discart of VDAB Flemish Brabant.
They said that those who are interested are offered a special support program. VDAB helps them explore training options and gives guidance for job applications. Finding staff in hospitality is still a major challenge.
VDAB Flemish Brabant has operated a mobile kitchen at Stationsplein in Halle since October 2024. In 2024 VDAB had 761 job vacancies in the Halle-Vilvoorde area, and at the end of September 2025, there were still 157 job vacancies available. Kitchen employees, fast food employees, and hospitality management were noted as jobs that are hard to fill. These jobs are hard to fill because they are looking for someone with skills, and they include evening and weekend shifts.
