New Security Measures: Live Camera Access for Belgian Police by Spring 2025
Halle (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – By spring 2025, Belgian police will have live access to train station security camera footage as part of a plan to enhance safety and improve crime response. This initiative, spearheaded by Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden, aims to foster better collaboration between 30 federal police units and local authorities, particularly in areas like Vilvoorde, which have seen an increase in crime and drug-related issues.
Currently, the police cannot access live footage from train stations, but this is set to change. The new system will allow local police to view live camera feeds at no cost, enabling them to better coordinate patrols and respond more quickly to incidents. By involving both federal and local police forces, the initiative promises enhanced security at key transit hubs.
How Live Camera Access Will Strengthen Police Response
Minister Verlinden announced the plan during a parliamentary session, emphasizing its potential to boost public safety. Live camera access will allow police to monitor high-risk areas more effectively, helping to prevent crime and protect passengers. If all goes according to plan, the system will be operational by spring 2025, marking a significant step toward reducing crime at Belgian train stations and improving cooperation between police, train operators, and local authorities.
In addition, Eva Demesmaeker highlighted the success of a new video wall installed in the Zennevallei police zone. This setup enables officers to monitor footage in real-time, rather than having to request it after a crime has already occurred. The ability to view live footage will save valuable time in responding to incidents.
For more than a decade, Vilvoorde’s Mayor Hans Bonte has been addressing the growing drug issues at the town’s train station. He is optimistic that these “virtual patrols” will finally make a significant impact on the ongoing situation.
