Greece Imposes Severe Penalties for Drivers

Greek authorities are implementing stricter road regulations with unprecedented penalties for violators. Running a red light can result in a fine of up to 2,000 euros and a one-year license suspension. Particularly harsh are the penalties for using a mobile phone while driving, with a first offense carrying a fine of 350 euros and a third offense amounting to 2,000 euros and a year without a license. If phone use causes a traffic accident, the fine increases to 4,000 euros, and the license can be revoked for up to eight years.

Running a red light incurs a fine of up to 2,000 euros and a year’s license suspension. The penalties for drunk driving are also becoming more severe. A high blood alcohol level can result in up to five years in prison, and repeated offenses lead to a 10-year license suspension. Parking on a disabled ramp now incurs a fine of 2,000 euros and a one-year license suspension. The fines for riding a motorcycle without a helmet have increased, with Greece having the highest motorcycle death rate in Europe. The first offense costs 350 euros, and each subsequent violation doubles the fine. The government aims to reduce road fatalities with these new measures.
