The second high-level conference titled “Albania 2030 in the EU – The Road of Reforms” took place in Tirana, drawing the attention of Albania’s highest governmental authorities and representatives from the Diplomatic Corps.
During his address at the session on “Social Dialogue in the Western Balkan Countries,” European Union Ambassador Silvio Gonzato affirmed the EU’s support for social policies in Albania.
He emphasized the importance of prioritizing social policies, noting the uncertainty surrounding job security for youth who are increasingly inclined to emigrate.
“Social dialogue is vital for the welfare of Albania and an essential component of social and employment strategies, which fall under group-chapter number 3 that will be opened shortly,” Gonzato remarked.
He also highlighted concerns regarding educational quality, stating that corruption significantly hinders young people’s aspirations.
According to him, there is a pressing need for a merit-based system.
“A more effective social dialogue is necessary. Often, NGOs are better positioned than government officials to engage with the youth,” stated Ambassador Gonzato.
“The European Union stands ready to assist you in employment and social dialogue initiatives through the Growth Plan, which targets socio-economic challenges in Albania and the broader Western Balkans,” he added.
On the other hand, Prime Minister Edi Rama addressed the conference, asserting that Albania’s integration into the European Union is essential for breaking free from its historical burdens.
Rama stressed the urgency for the country to seize the opportunity to finalize negotiations by 2027.
“For us Albanians, EU membership signifies liberation from our past and assurance that our individual freedoms and equality under the law—principles for which we are striving—will not fluctuate based on who governs in Tirana,” Rama remarked.
The Prime Minister underscored the ongoing reforms in Albania, citing advancements in the fight against corruption and improvements in governance, and noted that the negotiation process has now progressed to a more advanced stage.
Rama affirmed, “Albania has only one option, one plan, one path, and that is the European Union.”
The meeting also featured discussions from other high-ranking Albanian officials, including Parliament Speaker Elisa Spiropali and Fatmir Xhafaj, the chairman of the Special Anti-Corruption Commission. (April 4)
