Germany’s Merz Warns: “The US Is No Longer the America We Once Knew”

Merz’s warning comes as the Trump administration continues to make sweeping cuts across the U.S. federal government and foreign aid programs. Since taking office, the administration has sent mass emails offering “PLACEHOLDER8ccfaedc18cf0f35” to all federal employees, PLACEHOLDER5dd38f59368cf707, and removed dozens of prosecutors involved in cases related to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

In addition, foreign aid has been PLACEHOLDERbb710d66493954c3, and nearly all employees at the U.S. Agency for International Development have been placed PLACEHOLDER212322ab1be7df66.

Trump has also expressed intentions to PLACEHOLDER5ed686ba3cdb2f0f, PLACEHOLDER22c33210d5be80f7, and the Panama Canal, leaving open the possibility of military intervention.

Germany is preparing for a snap election on February 23, with Merz fighting to maintain his lead over the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk, the billionaire tech entrepreneur now closely tied to the Trump administration, has entered German politics, urging voters to support the AfD at a party rally where he also suggested Germans should “move on” from their historical guilt.

In December, Merz criticized Musk’s involvement in German politics, calling it “invasive and presumptuous” after Musk published an opinion piece in Welt am Sonntag, describing the AfD as Germany’s “last spark of hope.”
