Geraardsbergen (Eurotoday) – Denderland Shopping Center in Geraardsbergen, owned by Zabra, is now permanently closed due to safety concerns. The site will be demolished and transformed into a new development featuring housing, retail, and green areas. Plans are currently underway.
The Denderland Shopping Center in
Geraardsbergen, Belgium, has been shut down. Built in the 1980s, the building has deteriorated and is no longer considered safe. Zabra, the property owner, has confirmed that the shopping center will remain closed permanently. It has stood vacant since the beginning of the year and is now being sealed off to ensure public safety.
Authorities stated that the closure and sealing of the premises are necessary both to prevent accidents and to comply with insurance requirements. Additionally, parts of the parking lot have been closed due to unauthorized vehicle use and illegal dumping. Zabra aims to secure the area and prevent further misuse.
What’s Next for Denderland Shopping Center in Geraardsbergen?
Zabra is planning to redevelop the site. Although exact details have not been finalized, consultations are ongoing with the city of Geraardsbergen and the province. The goal is to create a space that benefits the local community.
Officials noted that before any redevelopment can begin, proper planning approvals must be obtained. The intention is to turn the space into something that serves residents living near the former mall.
“There are now all kinds of vehicles parked there, and it causes nuisance. We are going to have to deal with fly-tipping. We don’t want that,”
Zabra representatives stated.
“The entire site is waiting for a makeover. The plans for it are in preparation.”
Zabra envisions a new complex featuring homes, shops, and possibly spaces for community use. Green areas are a central part of the redevelopment plans as well, as they aim to enhance the quality of life for residents and improve the flow and connectivity to other parts of Geraardsbergen.
While demolition is being prepared, city officials are working to maintain accessibility for local residents. Although part of the parking area will be fenced off, pedestrian access will remain open, and some parking spots will still be available to nearby residents.
The city is committed to ensuring the area remains active and visible throughout the transition. The mayor emphasized ongoing cooperation with Zabra to ensure that the redevelopment aligns with urban planning goals. The ambition is to turn the site into a vibrant and inviting space for the public.

So, let me get this straight: they’re closing a shopping center that nobody wanted to go to anyway? Brilliant! Nothing screams “community spirit” quite like a parking lot turned into a luxury housing estate. 😏🚧

Oh joy, another shopping center bites the dust—just what Geraardsbergen needed! 🎉 Can’t wait for the ‘exciting’ green space where we can all enjoy a lovely view of… empty parking lots and fly-tipping. What a grand vision! 😏

Looks like Geraardsbergen’s shopping scene has taken a detour into the realm of safety—who knew a 1980s mall could be more dangerous than dodging cyclists in Amsterdam? 🚴♂️ Maybe they should just open a “museum of bad design” instead! 😂
