Rome – At a meeting in Rome on Monday, foreign ministers and representatives from seven European nations, including Slovenia, urged for the expedited integration of Western Balkan countries into the European Union. Slovenia’s foreign ministry highlighted the nation’s commitment to supporting the region’s rapid EU accession during the Friends of the Western Balkans meeting.
Representing Slovenia was State Secretary Melita Gabrič, who reiterated the country’s stance on speeding up the EU enlargement process. Slovenia aims to welcome as many countries from the Western Balkans as possible into the EU by 2030, stressing that the future of Europe is incomplete without their inclusion.
Also present at the meeting were Kaja Kallas, the EU’s chief foreign policy representative, and European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, the meeting’s host, proposed that countries should be granted membership by 2030, with Serbia and Albania possibly joining as soon as 2029.
The informal Friends of the Western Balkans group will mark its second anniversary in June. (February 10)
