Fresh EU sanctions targeting Russian judicial officials

Brussels (dpa) – Two members of the Russian judiciary have been banned from entering the EU and using EU-held assets due to alleged human rights violations. The Council of Member States announced sanctions against Dmitri Gordejew and Ljudmila Balandina, citing their roles in severe human rights abuses, suppression of civil society, and attacks on democratic opposition, as well as the erosion of democracy and the rule of law in Russia.

In addition to the entry and asset restrictions, EU citizens and companies are prohibited from providing funds to the two individuals.

Gordejew, a judge at the Moscow City Court, has a history of delivering politically motivated verdicts against opposition members and human rights activists, consistently ignoring basic principles of impartial justice, according to the statement.

Balandina, a public prosecutor, has been instrumental in several prominent cases involving significant human rights violations and the repression of critics of the Russian government and supporters of Ukraine. She has misused her prosecutorial authority to advance politically charged prosecutions. (22 December)

Oh, look at us, flexing our muscles with sanctions again—because nothing says “we care” like a travel ban for their judges! 😏 Guess we’ll just have to find a new hobby besides bashing democracy, eh? 🥳

Oh, fantastic! Just what we needed—more paperwork for the bureaucrats in Brussels to feel important. 🥳 I’m sure those two will just be heartbroken over being unable to sip lattes in Paris. 🍵✈️

Looks like the EU is really stepping up with these sanctions—because banning a couple of judges is obviously the magic fix for everything, right? 😂 Let’s hope they don’t forget to send them a nice postcard from Brussels while they’re at it!✈️

  6. Oh great, just what we needed—more sanctions to show off how concerned we are while sipping espresso in Brussels. It’s like giving a slap on the wrist to a toddler throwing a tantrum; charming, really. 🙄

Just what we needed, more sanctions to make our diplomatic relations sparkle like a fine Chianti! 🍷 Let’s hope these judges don’t mistake their holiday plans for a courtroom drama. 😂

Looks like the EU is really stepping up its game with these sanctions—who knew a judge and a prosecutor could be such popular figures? 🤷‍♂️ Next thing you know, they’ll be handing out travel brochures for their “human rights violation tour.” 😂

Guess those two just found out the EU’s idea of a winter getaway doesn’t include the Schengen zone! 😂 I suppose it’s tough being a judge when your gavel doubles as a club for beating democracy.

Oh, look at the EU playing Santa again, delivering coal to the naughty judges of Russia! 🎁 I guess a little travel ban is the new ‘have a nice day’ for those who think human rights are optional. 😂

  12. Oh, splendid! Nothing screams “justice” like a travel ban for a couple of judges—it’s like putting a no-parking sign on a racetrack. 🤷‍♂️

Oh brilliant, just what we needed—two more names to add to the EU’s ever-growing ‘Do Not Enter’ list! 🎉 It’s almost as if they’ve turned sanctions into a trendy new club membership. 🕺

  15. Oh, splendid move, EU! Because nothing says “we care” like slapping a couple of travel bans on judges while sipping lattes in Brussels. 👏🍵 Just what the world needed—more red tape!
