PARIS — France plans to increase its military presence in the Middle East following an Iranian counterattack on a French naval base in the area.
French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking before an emergency security and defense council meeting on Sunday evening, stated that France will “enhance its [military] position and defensive support to ally with those with whom we have defense treaties and adapt to the recent developments.”
Paris announced on Saturday that it was neither informed about nor involved in the American and Israeli strikes on Iran. Initially, Macron urged for diplomatic efforts to resume, but his stance changed after two Iranian drones targeted a French naval base in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday.
