France Aims to Support Struggling Foreign Scientists

Paris – The National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), a leading institution in French research, is introducing a new initiative aimed at attracting international scientists whose work is under threat. This effort has the backing of the French government.

Since Donald Trump resumed his presidency in January, researchers and universities have faced increased scrutiny from his administration, raising concerns over their futures as academic freedoms and funding have been compromised.

Antoine Petit, the CEO of CNRS, shared with AFP that initial discussions indicate a “small momentum” primarily affecting “the vast majority of non-Americans.”

As Europe’s largest research organization with a workforce of 34,000, CNRS is dedicated to welcoming “colleagues who are currently hindered in their research,” as well as French researchers living abroad. Some of these expatriates “are reluctant to raise their families in Trump’s America,” he noted.

This new program, named “Choose CNRS,” follows a similar initiative announced by the government in mid-April titled “Choose France for science.” (May 2, 2025)

Oh, splendid! Just what we need—a French lifeboat for scientists drowning in the U.S. political sea. 🇫🇷 Because who wouldn’t want to trade a precarious academic future for a baguette and a side of existential dread? 🥖😜

Oh, how charming, France is playing the hero for the world’s scientists while the rest of us mere mortals are just trying to survive the daily grind. Next, they’ll be offering croissants and free wine with every research grant! 🍷🥐

Oh, brilliant! Just what we need—more foreign scientists in France, because who wouldn’t want to swap the thrill of academic freedom in the States for a baguette and a glass of wine while grappling with red tape? 🍷🇫🇷

Oh brilliant, just what we need—France playing the white knight for the world’s scientists while we’re here still trying to figure out how to assemble IKEA furniture without losing our minds. 🙄🇫🇷 They might as well call it “Choose France and Avoid the Drama!” 😂

Well, isn’t that just lovely? France, the land of baguettes and berets, now wants to play savior to scientists fleeing from a political circus. 🎪 Maybe if they toss in a few croissants, they’ll really seal the deal! 🥐

Look at France, trying to play the superhero for scientists while the rest of us just watch from the sidelines, munching on baguettes and sipping café. 🤷‍♂️ Who knew “Choose CNRS” would be the latest trend in academic life jackets? 🥖🇫🇷
