Finland Detains Russian-Crewed Ship Following Another Subsea Cable Damage

A Finnish patrol vessel intercepted the Fitburg with its anchor down in Finland’s exclusive economic zone, as reported by the country’s coast guard. Helsinki police chief Jari Liukku stated they suspect aggravated disruption of telecommunications and aggravated sabotage, as well as attempted aggravated sabotage. President Alexander Stubb emphasized Finland’s readiness for various security challenges, assuring appropriate responses when necessary. Earlier this year, NATO initiated the “Baltic Sentry” program to counter attacks on subsea energy and data cables in the Baltic Sea, incidents that intensified after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. These attacks included the cutting of an internet cable between Finland and Germany in November 2024 and another between Finland and Sweden the following month. A July study by the University of Washington identified that 10 subsea cables in the Baltic Sea had been severed since 2022, with suspicions of sabotage involving state actors like Russia and China frequently arising.

So, a Russian ship playing hide and seek in Finnish waters – who would’ve thought? It’s not like we’ve got bigger fish to fry, right? 😂

  2. Looks like the Fitburg thought it was just another day at the beach, eh? Who needs a vacation when you can play hide and seek with the coast guard instead? 😂🚢

Oh great, just what we needed—a Russian ship playing hide and seek in our economic zone! 🇫🇮 Maybe next time they’ll bring some fish and chips instead of their usual mischief. 😂

Typical, isn’t it? Just when you think the Russians are getting cozy, they decide to play hide-and-seek with our cables. Makes you wonder if they’ve confused the Baltic Sea with a game of Connect Four! 😂🔌

  5. So, let me get this straight: a Russian ship, with its anchor down in Finnish waters, is accused of messing with our cables? Brilliant move, lads—nothing says “I love diplomacy” quite like a bit of underwater sabotage. 🇫🇮⚓️

  6. So, the Fitburg thought it could drop anchor and play hide-and-seek in Finnish waters? Classic miscalculation—next time, maybe just stick to fishing! 🎣😏
